New Delhi, March 15, 2024: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has set an ambitious target to extend its outreach to 50,000 government school students across seven states by 2026. This initiative seeks to promote science education and provide career guidance in vernacular languages, with the ultimate goal of inspiring more youngsters to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
Current Outreach Efforts:
IIT Madras has already made significant strides in this direction by reaching out to 9,193 rural government schools and distributing 3,20,702 books to students in states including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
The institute’s outreach program encompasses various activities, including translating popular science books into vernacular languages, offering career guidance in local languages, and conducting scientific experiments and motivational presentations to inspire students.
As part of this initiative, students in government schools undergo a free career guidance assessment tool called ‘My Choice My Future’ (MCMF), which assists them in identifying suitable career pathways based on their skills and interests.
Career Guidance Tool:
The ‘My Choice My Future’ (MCMF) tool was developed by teachers and alumni of IIT Madras in collaboration with BodhBridge. It provides comprehensive career guidance assessments and insights to students.
Available in seven Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, and English, the tool aims to empower students to make informed career choices aligned with their aptitudes and aspirations.
Feedback and Impact:
The initiative has received positive feedback from schools, with educators acknowledging its role in enhancing students’ scientific knowledge, reasoning abilities, and enthusiasm for STEM subjects.
Through interactive sessions, hands-on experiments, and discussions on real-world applications of scientific principles, students are encouraged to explore and pursue STEM education with greater enthusiasm and confidence.
This initiative by IIT Madras underscores its commitment to fostering a culture of scientific curiosity and innovation among government school students, ultimately contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in STEM fields.
