New Delhi, 8 April 2024: The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has announced changes to the West Bengal Class 12 curriculum for the academic year 2024-25. The board has decided to discontinue three subjects – Punjabi, Gujarati, and French – from the curriculum due to consistently low enrollment in these subjects over the past few years.
New Vocational Subjects Added
To replace the discontinued subjects, WBCHSE has introduced three new vocational subjects for Class 12 students:
1. Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI)
2. Food Processing
3. Telecom (TELV)
Other New Subjects
In addition to the vocational subjects, the board has also added three new academic subjects:
1. Applied Artificial Intelligence (APAI)
2. Cybersecurity (CBST)
3. Science of Well-being (SOW)
These new subjects will have a theory exam worth 70 marks and a practical exam worth 30 marks.
Changes in Marking Scheme
The board has also made changes to the marking scheme for three existing subjects:
- Health and Physical Education: Theory – 70 marks, Practical – 30 marks
- Music: Theory – 50 marks, Practical – 50 marks
- Visual Arts: Theory – 50 marks, Practical – 50 marks
Subject Code Changes
The WBCHSE has also updated the subject codes for some subjects, such as Agronomy (AGNM) being renamed to Agriculture (AGRI) and Home Management and Family Resource Management (HMFR) being renamed to Human Development and Resource Management (HDRM).
These curriculum changes aim to align West Bengal Class 12 education with emerging trends and skill requirements in the job market while also addressing the low student enrollment in certain subjects.
