Selection Process: Two Categories of Candidates
The IGNOU PhD Admission 2026 selection is carried out through two clearly defined categories:
Category A — UGC NET with JRF (with Fellowship): Candidates who have qualified UGC NET with Junior Research Fellowship are directly called for an interview. The interview carries 100% weightage in determining the final merit. Category A candidates who are selected are also eligible for the UGC-JRF stipend of ₹37,000 per month for the first two years, increasing to ₹42,000 per month thereafter — provided by UGC, not IGNOU.
Category B — UGC NET without JRF (from June 2024 onwards): Candidates who have qualified UGC NET without JRF are shortlisted based on their NET score, which carries 70% weightage, followed by an interview carrying 30% weightage. Shortlisted candidates are called for the interview conducted at IGNOU Headquarters, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi.
A combined merit list is prepared across Category A and Category B for final seat allocation. Candidates with CSIR-NET/JRF, GATE, or M.Phil. degrees may also be considered for exemption from the entrance test, subject to the official notification’s specified criteria.
