The Maharashtra Rain Alert intensified through Wednesday and Thursday, with the city recording 134 mm of rainfall in South Mumbai, 164 mm in the Eastern Suburbs, and 149 mm in the Western Suburbs between 8 AM on July 1 and 6 AM on July 2, according to BMC data. The India Meteorological Department issued a Red Alert for Palghar and an Orange Alert for Mumbai and Thane, prompting district authorities to shut schools and colleges and pushing the University of Mumbai to postpone examinations scheduled for July 2 in the worst-affected areas.
Where Schools Have Been Closed
As part of the escalating Maharashtra Rain Alert, civic bodies across several districts have declared holidays as a precautionary step:

- Palghar: Schools ordered shut by Collector Dr Indu Rani Jakhar following the IMD’s Red Alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall
- Panvel, Uran, and Raigad: Local civic bodies declared a holiday for both schools and colleges
- Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan-Dombivli: No closure order issued so far, with BMC, NMMC, TMC, and KDMC keeping institutions open as of the latest update
Officials have indicated that classes in the affected districts may resume once waterlogging subsides, though no fixed reopening date has been confirmed yet.
Mumbai University Exams Affected
In response to the deteriorating conditions, the University of Mumbai has postponed examinations scheduled for July 2 in the Palghar and Panvel regions, aligning with the broader precautionary measures taken by district administrations. Students appearing for the affected papers are advised to watch the university’s official examination portal for the revised date sheet, since rescheduled papers are typically announced within a few days of postponement, based on how similar disruptions have been handled in the past.
Ground Situation and What’s Next
Widespread waterlogging has been reported across low-lying pockets of the city, including Worli, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Jogeshwari, and Mumbra, slowing traffic and disrupting daily commutes. Palghar’s Disaster Management Cell has confirmed no major accidents or casualties so far despite the intensity of rainfall, though authorities continue monitoring the situation closely. With the IMD forecasting continued heavy showers over the Mumbai Metropolitan Region for the next three days, residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and steer clear of waterlogged and flood-prone areas until conditions stabilise.
