The standoff between the government and the Opposition over alleged NEET-UG 2026 irregularities deepened this week as the NEET Row intensified, with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan asserting that the government is fully prepared for a parliamentary debate, even as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologise to students. The exchange, which unfolded through 21–22 July 2026, follows days of protests during the Monsoon Session of Parliament and a dramatic detention of Opposition leaders outside the Prime Minister’s residence.

What Triggered the Standoff

The controversy stems from allegations of a paper leak and other irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination, an issue that has fuelled protests since early June, led largely by a group called the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Tensions escalated on 20 July 2026, the opening day of the Monsoon Session, when CJP supporters attempted a “Chalo Sansad” march toward Parliament and clashed with Delhi Police, who used force to disperse the crowd. The following day, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and other Opposition leaders staged a surprise sit-in outside the Prime Minister’s residence on Lok Kalyan Marg, demanding accountability over the police action and the exam controversy.

Rahul Gandhi’s Demands and Detention

Delhi Police detained Gandhi and several other leaders at Chhatrasal Stadium before releasing them later the same day. In a video recorded during his detention, Gandhi said he had asked Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for a parliamentary debate on the students’ issue. He went on to list a set of demands: an apology from PM Modi for the police action, the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, action against those responsible for the alleged assault on protesters, and the withdrawal of cases filed against students. He also questioned the state of India’s education system, pointing to repeated paper leaks and rising education costs as issues deserving answers.

Dharmendra Pradhan’s Response on Neet Row

Breaking his silence on the protests, Pradhan accused the Congress of using students as political tools to disrupt the Monsoon Session, alleging that the sit-in outside the PM’s residence caused public inconvenience and ignored security protocols. He maintained that the government had already offered a comprehensive discussion on NEET in Parliament, but that the Congress chose “political spectacle over democratic debate.” Pradhan reiterated that the government remains committed to addressing student concerns through reforms and accountability, rather than what he characterised as manufactured confrontation.

Where Things Stand in Parliament

Efforts to defuse the standoff have included talks between Opposition leaders and government representatives, including Minister of State Jitendra Singh and Home Secretary Govind Mohan, though these discussions reportedly ended inconclusively. With the Monsoon Session scheduled to run till 13 August 2026, both sides continue to trade blame publicly even as the underlying question — whether and when a dedicated NEET debate will take place in the House — remains unresolved. Congress MPs have separately moved adjournment motions in the Lok Sabha seeking a discussion on the paper leak issue.
