NTA AI-enabled helpline: The National Testing Agency (NTA) is getting an AI-enabled helpline to answer candidates’ examination-related queries in multiple languages. The toll-free number, earlier used by the Nandan Nilekani-led High Power Task Force (HPTF) to collect suggestions on examination reforms, is being recast as the NTA’s help desk line.
Where the Number Came From?
The toll-free number, 1800 180 47 47, was initially set up by the NTA. The HPTF issued it in August and asked stakeholders to submit suggestions by September 13.
A government official said the number is now idle. “Now, as the committee has received suggestions and work on the final report is underway, the toll-free phone number is lying unused. So, it has been decided to recast it for the NTA’s help desk,” the official said.
Still in the Testing Phase
Officials said the helpline has not yet been announced publicly. The NTA is currently testing the toll-free service and its AI features. Students should therefore wait for an official NTA announcement before relying on the number for queries.
How the AI Feature Is Expected to Work?
The AI feature is expected to let students ask questions in any language and receive answers based on the information available in the NTA’s backend. Officials said students sometimes struggle to navigate websites, and language barriers affect students from regional backgrounds. The feature is expected to help in the pre-examination process.
Questions Students Could Ask
Officials gave examples of queries the helpline is meant to handle:
- “When is JEE?”
- “When is the UGC-NET examination?”
- “How do I fill the form?”
- “How much fee do I have to pay?”
- “What documents are required?”
- “What is the last date?”
- Questions about eligibility criteria
These are mostly routine questions about dates, forms, fees and documents, which are the queries that tend to flood NTA helplines during application windows.
Part of a Wider NTA Overhaul
The helpline is part of the ongoing overhaul of the NTA, steered by the six-member HPTF. According to the report, the changes follow recent students’ protests over NEET-UG paper leaks, which ultimately led to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The report also notes that NTA’s operations were moved in the last month to a newly allotted office in the Government of India Press Building on Minto Road.
What Students Should Do Now?
- Do not assume the helpline is live. Wait for an official NTA announcement
- Keep using the official NTA and exam websites for dates, fees and instructions
- Be careful about unofficial numbers or websites claiming to be NTA helplines, especially during application seasons
- Watch for NTA notices on launch date, supported languages and hours of service

Why This Matters?
Every year, lakhs of students apply for NEET, JEE, CUET and UGC-NET, and many have trouble finding dates, fees or document lists on large websites. A multilingual helpline that answers from the NTA’s own data could reduce this confusion, especially for students from regional-language backgrounds. How well it works will depend on the accuracy of the AI answers and on the quality of the underlying information, which is why the testing phase matters. Students should treat the service as unconfirmed until the NTA formally launches it.
