Private Nursing Colleges in West Bengal

Private Nursing Colleges in West Bengal have multiplied dramatically across West Bengal over the past few years, with the state now home to close to 290 private institutions, up from under 40 before the COVID-19 pandemic. The rapid expansion has opened up thousands of new seats for BSc Nursing, GNM, and ANM courses, but it has also brought sharper attention to how consistently quality and standards are being maintained across such a large and fast-growing network of colleges.

A Post-Pandemic Boom in Private Nursing Education

For years, nursing education in West Bengal was dominated by government colleges and a small number of long-established private institutions. That balance has shifted sharply since the pandemic, as hospitals across India and abroad ramped up recruitment of trained nurses. Private players moved quickly to fill the gap, setting up institutions offering BSc Nursing, GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery), and ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery) programmes across the state, often in districts that previously had little access to nursing education at all.

Seat Numbers Tell the Story

The scale of the shift becomes clear when looking at the state’s seat matrix. According to WBJEE data based on recent trends, West Bengal offers roughly 2,400 ANM seats and 6,500 GNM seats each year — yet government and government-aided institutions account for only about 500 ANM and 2,817 GNM seats between them. The remaining majority of seats now sit with private colleges approved by the West Bengal Nursing Council (WBNC) and the Indian Nursing Council (INC), a dramatic reversal from a system that once ran almost entirely through public institutions.

What’s Driving the Demand

Faculty and students point to a straightforward employability pitch behind the boom. Nursing has traditionally been seen as central to the healthcare workforce, and the growth of multi-speciality hospitals alongside rising recruitment in both government and private healthcare has made it an attractive, job-oriented career path. Students are also increasingly returning to West Bengal to study after having considered institutions in states like Karnataka and Odisha, adding further pressure on seat competition even as new colleges continue to open.
