New Delhi, February 27, 2024: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has set up a 15-member national task force to tackle the recent rise in mental health issues and suicides among medical students. Headed by Dr. B.M Suresh, Professor of Psychiatry at NIMHANS Bangalore, the committee has to submit its final recommendations report by May 31st, 2024.

The expert panel will analyze literature, data trends, and factors behind poor mental wellbeing and self-harm incidents among healthcare students. It will propose evidence-based solutions to bolster the at-risk groups psychologically and emotionally. Field visits to colleges with reported suicides are also on the agenda.

Over the last 5 years, around 119 medical students have died by suicides as per RTI data including both undergraduate and postgraduates. Ragging complaints and drop-outs are also not uncommon. The high-stress nature of medical education combined with a multitude of academic, financial, and personal pressures contribute majorly.

Through regular meetings, the task force aims to formulate implementable strategies on:

Suicide prevention protocols
Addressing stigma around mental health
Enhancing student-teacher engagement
Fostering support groups and counseling
Spreading awareness on risky signs

College administrations equally need better orientation to ensure sensitivity in handling struggling students. Gradual systemic changes are vital to nurture talent holistically.

If the recommendations succeed, they can save many distressed lives from the brink. The NMC should proactively execute suggested measures and make student wellbeing an integral priority.
