AI Curriculum to Begin from Class 3 in Indian SchoolsNewsIMTS

2026-27 academic session will see the introduction of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking (AI & CT) in all Indian schools from Class 3 onwards, announced the Ministry of Education. The Department of School Education & Literacy is working with CBSE, NCERT, KVS, and NVS to design an inclusive curriculum under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education this year. An expert committee chaired by Prof. Karthik Raman of IIT Madras will develop the AI curriculum. During a stakeholder consultation on October 29, 2025, DoSeL Secretary Sanjay Kumar emphasized that AI education should be treated as a basic universal skill. The curriculum aims to promote the ethical use of AI for solving complex challenges. Teacher training through NISHTHA modules and video-based learning resources will support implementation. Resource materials and digital content will be developed by December 2025, ensuring the program aligns with NEP this year while meeting India's specific educational needs. AI Education to Start from Class 3 in 2026

Starting from the 2026-27 academic year, Indian schools will introduce Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking (AI & CT) for students from Class 3 onwards. The Ministry of Education has announced this initiative as part of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. The curriculum development is being handled by an expert committee led by Prof. Karthik Raman from IIT Madras, with support from educational bodies like CBSE, NCERT, KVS, and NVS. This early introduction of AI education aims to build foundational technology skills in young students, treating AI literacy as a basic universal skill necessary for future generations.

Teacher Training and Resource Development Underway

To implement the AI curriculum effectively, the Department of School Education & Literacy is preparing comprehensive teacher training programs through NISHTHA modules and video-based learning resources. During a stakeholder consultation held in October 2025, officials emphasized the importance of teaching AI ethics alongside technical skills. The curriculum will focus on practical applications of AI for solving real-world problems while promoting responsible use of technology. Resource materials and digital content for the program will be ready by December 2025, ensuring that both teachers and students have adequate support when the curriculum launches in 2026.
