Delhi to Recognize Private Schools in Non-Conforming Areas

The Delhi government has announced plans to recognize private unaided schools in non-conforming areas, which will create 20,000 new seats for students. Education Minister Ashish Sood made this announcement on January 11, 2025, stating that this decision resolves a decade-old issue affecting hundreds of unrecognized schools. Nearly 500 schools will now come under the Directorate of Education (DoE), ensuring proper oversight and legitimacy. This move will particularly benefit students from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), disadvantaged groups, and children with special needs who will have access to these newly recognized seats.

Application Process and Compliance Requirements

Schools seeking recognition must apply through an online portal that will be open from November 1-30, 2025. The application process requires schools to submit documentation following a 73-point pro forma that assesses legal status, infrastructure, safety measures, and academic parameters. Recognition will only be granted after thorough inspection and verification of compliance with all requirements. Schools with expired recognition must complete all formalities or face penalties, including fines of Rs 1 lakh plus Rs 10,000 daily for violations. The government has advised parents to enroll their children only in DoE-recognized schools to ensure quality education.
