February 13th, 2024,Uttarakhand: In an unfortunate incident, a 20-year-old female B.Tech third-year student enrolled in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Roorkee was found dead in her hostel room on February 11th.
Preliminary police investigations reveal the young student presumably died by suicide via hanging 3-4 days earlier as per roommate complaints over the foul smell. A suicide note was also recovered from the spot.
Officials suspect factors including tensions from parental separation coupled with potential academic stress as triggering causes. But exact details remain unclear and are currently subject to ongoing inquiry.
In an official statement, IIT Roorkee authorities conveyed profound grief over the loss, terming the student an esteemed member showing great promise. The institute is cooperating fully with concerned departments in ascertaining details regarding the traumatic incident.
Earlier in 2023, two back-to-back student suicide cases were reported from IIT Kanpur as well drawing sharp reactions. Counseling avenues must be bolstered while sensitizing all stakeholders to detect signs of emotional turbulence proactively.
