New Delhi, March 21, 2024: JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections scheduled for March 22, the presidential candidates engaged in a spirited debate addressing various pressing issues.
Election Atmosphere: The presidential debate, held at Jhelum Lawn, witnessed a charged atmosphere with enthusiastic students and supporters rallying behind their respective candidates. Retired Supreme Court Justice V Ramasubramanian presided over the debate to ensure fairness.
Diverse Range of Issues: Candidates from different student outfits addressed a wide range of issues, including Manipur violence, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, farmers’ protests, electoral bonds, and the Israel-Palestine conflict. They also touched upon university-related concerns such as campus safety, discrimination against women, and minority reservation.
Candidate Promises: Aradhana Yadav from the Samajwadi Party’s student wing pledged to advocate for minority reservation and “deprivation points” to support students from backward regions, particularly women. Other candidates, such as Dhananjay from the United Left Alliance, highlighted concerns about increased fees due to HEFA loans, unemployment, and the commercialization of education.
Party Perspectives: Candidates representing various student outfits, including RSS-affiliated ABVP, NSUI, and BAPSA, presented their party’s perspectives and governance achievements. They critiqued both left and right-wing groups and appealed to the student community for support.
Disruptions and Response: The debate faced disruptions from some students, leading to the confiscation of drums and instruments used for disruption by the university’s Election Committee.
Upcoming Elections: The JNUSU polls are scheduled for March 22, with results expected to be declared on March 24. The elections hold significance as they provide a platform for students to voice their concerns and elect representatives who will address their needs and aspirations.
The presidential debate offered insights into the diverse range of issues and perspectives prevalent among the student community at JNU, setting the stage for an eventful and closely watched election day.
