Why Kerala's medical college teachers are on strike

Medical college teachers across Kerala began a strike on November 13, 2025, disrupting healthcare services in government medical colleges. The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers' Association (KGMCTA) called for the strike after talks with Health Minister Veena George failed to resolve their concerns. Emergency services, casualty departments, and labour rooms have been affected, with most scheduled surgeries postponed. Only critical surgeries are being performed during the strike period. Medical students are also facing disruptions as regular classes have been suspended.

Teachers' demands and impact on healthcare

The striking teachers have several key demands including the creation of additional teaching posts and filling existing assistant professor vacancies. They are also protesting against work arrangement transfers and seeking payment of pending arrears from the 2020 pay revision. Salary anomalies remain another major concern for the association. The strike has significantly affected patient care across Kerala's government medical colleges, with thousands of outpatients and those needing elective procedures facing delays. KGMCTA has warned they will intensify their protest if the government fails to address their demands soon.
