On September 11, this year, the Ministry of Human Resource Development decided to remember the birthday of “this great son of India” by recalling his contribution to the cause of education in India. “November 11 every year, from this year onwards, will be celebrated as the National Education Day, with declaring it as a holiday,” it said. Schools, colleges and other educational institutions in the country will celebrate the day with events including seminars, essay-writing, workshops, and poster-making, among others. Azad served as the first education minister of independent India from August 15, 1947 to February 2, 1958. He was also a freedom fighter, scholar, and a senior political leader of Jawaharlal Nehru’s government.
