New Delhi, 5 April 2024: The National Testing Agency (NTA) successfully deployed advanced AI tools to curb unfair means and impersonation during the first day of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2024 session 2 exams.
According to the NTA, on the opening day of the exams on April 4, the agency detected and prevented 1 case of impersonation and 9 cases of unfair means (UFM) across the country. The JEE Main 2024 session 2 exams, which are crucial for admission to premier engineering programs like BE, BTech, and BArch, are being conducted from April 4 to 12.
To ensure the integrity of the exams, the NTA has implemented a comprehensive security framework, including the use of the AI-powered identity verification tool iFace. This system cross-checks each candidate’s live photograph against the photo on their admit card, effectively deterring impersonation attempts.
“A detailed plan was chalked out to execute the examination,” the NTA said in a statement. “Control Rooms for Strict Vigil and monitoring were set up at NTA, New Delhi. Live feeds from Cameras installed in each of the Exam rooms/Labs were closely monitored by Virtual Observers who generated real-time alerts.”
In addition to the AI-based identity verification, the NTA has also deployed a large team of officials, including biometric staff, frisking personnel, CCTV operators, and flying squads, to facilitate the smooth and secure conduct of the exams.
The agency stated, “A large pool of functionaries has been deployed by NTA for providing biometric, frisking, CCTV, and Jammer Services, besides NTA’s Officers and its Observers, Virtual Observers, and Flying Squads to facilitate smooth conduct of the examination.”
These measures have been implemented in response to the several instances of JEE Main scams, paper leaks, and impersonation cases reported in previous years. The NTA defines unfair means as any activity that allows a candidate to gain an unfair advantage, such as possession of prohibited items, breaching exam rules, cheating, or fabrication of documents. Those caught using UFM may face severe consequences, including a 3-year debarment from future exams and potential criminal action.
The NTA’s proactive efforts to ensure a fair and secure examination process are commendable. They not only protect the integrity of the JEE Main exams but also safeguard the future of aspiring engineering students in India.
