The Maharashtra Government has constituted a Special Task Force to oversee and streamline the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across universities and colleges in the state. A Government Resolution issued by the Higher and Technical Education Department formally established the committee. Former Savitribai Phule Pune University Vice-Chancellor Dr Nitin Karmalkar has been appointed as its chairperson.
The task force includes Vice-Chancellors of Mumbai University, Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University, and Shivaji University along with senior officials and academic experts.

Key Responsibilities of the Task Force
The committee has been mandated to frame guidelines and recommend policy measures on the following areas:
- Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) structure and rollout across Maharashtra
- Lateral entry, re-entry, and exit policies for students at different stages of their degree
- Student migration framework for movement between universities under uniform norms
- Credit transfer system for inter-institution academic movement
- Uniform academic calendar for all Maharashtra universities
- Internship structures and mandatory industry linkage guidelines
Why This Matters for Students
Maharashtra is home to over 900 affiliated colleges across multiple universities. Without unified NEP implementation guidelines, different universities have been adopting reforms at different speeds, creating inconsistencies in degree recognition and credit validity.
| University | Status of NEP Implementation |
|---|---|
| Autonomous Colleges | Partial implementation underway |
| Affiliated Colleges | Guidelines awaited from task force |
| State Technical Institutes | Under DTE Maharashtra oversight |
The task force will report regularly to the government with recommended actions. All Maharashtra universities are expected to align their academic calendars and curriculum structures with NEP 2020 as per task force guidelines before the 2026-27 academic session begins.
