On 15 July 2026, the Bar Council of India (BCI) issued a critical notification granting existing Centres of Legal Education (CLEs) a final opportunity to complete their pending BCI law college approval renewal applications by July 31, 2026. The statutory regulator noted that several law schools across the country have left their applications incomplete due to missing documents, unpaid fees, or unaddressed portal deficiencies. Failure to finalize these applications within the stipulated timeframe will lead to a direct halt in student intake, as unapproved institutions will be prohibited from admitting students for the upcoming academic session.
Why the Regulator is Enforcing Strict Compliance
The BCI’s prompt intervention is explicitly aimed at protecting the academic interests of prospective law students. Under the Rules of Legal Education, only graduates from institutions formally recognized and approved by the BCI are eligible to enroll with State Bar Councils to practice law.

By enforcing a hard deadline, the BCI is ensuring that all functioning law colleges maintain uniform infrastructural and pedagogical standards. The council clarified that this final extension is strictly limited to the BCI law college approval renewal for existing courses and approved student intakes. It does not apply to institutions seeking to establish new law colleges, introduce new courses, or increase their overall seat capacity.
Steps Required for Law Colleges to Complete Registration
To ensure a successful renewal and avoid regulatory action, colleges must carefully execute the following application steps through the online portal:
-
Complete Portal Submission: Institutions that have only registered on the portal or generated an application number must complete the entire process.
-
Pay Mandatory Fees: Every CLE must pay a one-time, non-refundable portal registration fee of Rs 50,000, alongside any pending course renewal charges.
-
Rectify Outstanding Deficiencies: Any issues or compliance gaps previously flagged on the portal dashboard or via official email must be fully resolved.
-
Verify Application Status: Even if an institution believes its submission is complete, administrators must double-check that the status is officially recorded as finalized on the dashboard.
