BITS Pilani AMRIT Centre: The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani has received a $1 million contribution from alumnus and entrepreneur Anurag Jain to lay the foundation for a new Centre of Excellence. The proposed centre will be established at the institute’s Goa campus, with a focus on enabling research, innovation, and education in the field of advanced materials.

According to BITS Pilani, this initial contribution is just the starting point — the centre will require a multi-million investment over the years to reach its full scale of development.

About the AMRIT Centre

The new initiative, named the Anurag Jain Materials Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence (AMRIT), has been set up to give researchers, students, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and international academic partners a platform to develop advanced materials and convert laboratory innovations into commercially viable products.

Who Is Anurag Jain?

The contributor, Anurag Jain, is an alumnus from BITS Pilani’s 1988 graduating class. He currently serves as Chairman of Access Healthcare, a global healthcare services platform, and is also co-founder and managing partner of Perot Jain, a Dallas-based venture capital firm that invests in artificial intelligence, robotics, and computer vision.

Research Focus Areas

In its early phases, the AMRIT centre will primarily focus on two-dimensional and functional materials, exploring their applications across a wide range of energy-related technologies, including:

  • Batteries
  • Supercapacitors
  • Hydrogen production
  • Fuel cells
  • Photovoltaics
  • Carbon capture
  • Semiconductors
  • Sensors
  • Energy utilisation and storage devices

This broad research scope positions the centre at the intersection of materials science and clean energy technology, two areas seeing significant global and national investment.

Why This Centre Matters Now?

According to the institute, the establishment of a dedicated centre for advanced materials research comes at a time when India is expanding public investment in critical minerals, semiconductor manufacturing, clean energy, and other strategic industries.

Taking inspiration from central government initiatives such as the National Critical Mineral Mission and Semicon India, BITS Pilani aims for the AMRIT centre to support the country’s push toward technological self-reliance, while also building an internationally recognised research programme in the field.

Collaboration Plans

The institute has stated its intent to collaborate with leading universities, laboratories, companies, and experts, both within India and internationally. Additionally, distinguished scientists, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders are expected to advise the centre, helping guide its research direction, partnerships, and long-term strategic path.

Why This Matters?

Philanthropic contributions from alumni entrepreneurs like Anurag Jain reflect a broader trend of industry-academia collaboration aimed at accelerating India’s research capabilities in emerging technology sectors. With advanced materials playing a foundational role in semiconductors, clean energy, and next-generation electronics, a dedicated centre of this scale could help bridge the gap between academic research and commercial application — a challenge that has historically limited the translation of lab-based innovation into scalable industry solutions in India.

For BITS Pilani, the AMRIT centre also represents an opportunity to strengthen its research profile in a strategically important field, potentially attracting further funding, international partnerships, and top research talent to its Goa campus in the years ahead.
