DTU Launches Economics Double Major: Delhi Technological University (DTU) has introduced a Double Major Track in Economics for BTech students, effective from the 2026-27 academic session. The announcement was made at the university’s annual press conference held to mark 85 years of DTU, as part of a broader set of new academic programmes aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
DTU Launches Economics Double Major Programme Overview
The new track is designed to help engineering students build a strong understanding of economics alongside their technical education. With this launch, DTU becomes one of the few universities in India to offer a dedicated Economics double major within a BTech programme. The programme aims to strengthen students’ analytical, quantitative, and decision-making abilities, while broadening their employability across multiple sectors.

- Programme: Double Major Track in Economics
- Eligible students: BTech students at DTU
- Starting session: 2026-27
- Announced at: DTU’s 85th anniversary press conference
Curriculum And Subjects Covered
The curriculum includes contemporary subjects such as Network Economics, Platform Economics, Economics of AI, Game Theory, Mechanism Design, Machine Learning for Economics, and High-Frequency Algorithmic Trading. This mix of applied and technology-linked economics coursework is intended to complement the technical training BTech students already receive, giving them an interdisciplinary edge as they enter the workforce.
Career Opportunities For Graduates
Graduates of the programme are expected to find opportunities across technology companies, financial institutions, consulting firms, digital platforms, data analytics organisations, public policy bodies, and research institutions. DTU believes the combination of engineering training and applied economics will prepare students for roles that increasingly require both technical and analytical skills, particularly in sectors like fintech, policy research, and data-driven consulting.
Part Of DTU’s Broader Academic Expansion
DTU Launches Economics Double Major is one of several initiatives DTU announced at the same press conference, alongside new Integrated BSc-MSc programmes in Data Science and Applied Statistics, and a 4+1 Accelerated BTech-MS Programme in collaboration with the University of Houston, USA. DTU Vice Chancellor Prof. Prateek Sharma said these initiatives are aligned with the objectives of NEP 2020 and support the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047. Further details on eligibility, registration, and course requirements for the double major will be available on the official DTU website.
Alongside the new academic tracks, DTU also announced that it is integrating industry-recognised micro-credential programmes into its curriculum, partnering with organisations such as the National Institute of Solar Energy, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and Siemens, among others, to offer students practical training in high-growth sectors. The university additionally revealed that it secured nearly 40 patents over the past year and received research funding from agencies including ANRF, MeitY, DRDO, and ISRO, reflecting a broader push to strengthen its research ecosystem alongside these new academic offerings.
