In a major administrative move for the 2026–27 academic session, the University of Delhi has officially constituted a high-level, six-member committee to evaluate requests for a DU one-year PG seat hike. The decision, announced via a formal notification from the Registrar’s office, comes in response to multiple representations from various academic departments and massive student demonstrations demanding expanded capacity in these freshly launched advanced degree options. With admission portals already active, the administration is treating the matter with high priority to avoid disrupting the current allocation cycle.

Protests Erupt Over Seat Crunch in New Courses

The urgency behind the potential DU one-year PG seat hike stems from a massive influx of eligible candidates following the university’s transition to the National Education Policy (NEP) framework. This academic year marks the highly anticipated graduation of the very first batch of students from the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).

Under the new guidelines, these four-year graduates are uniquely eligible to complete their master’s degree in just twelve months. However, because the university initially kept intake capacity constrained, thousands of qualified students suddenly found themselves competing for an incredibly limited pool of spaces. This imbalance triggered widespread student protests outside the Arts Faculty, led by student organisations like the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who submitted an urgent memorandum to Registrar Prof. Vikas Gupta seeking an immediate expansion of the student intake.

What Lies Ahead for Applicants?

The newly formed panel has been given a strict 10-day timeline to deliberate on the matter and submit their final implementation blueprint to the varsity administration. The core challenge for the committee will be assessing how well individual departments can handle extra student volume without stressing current faculty ratios and physical lecture hall space.
