IIT Bombay IISc IBM collaboration: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have partnered with IBM to speed up innovation in agentic AI, sovereign AI, quantum computing, and next-generation computing systems, broadening IBM’s research collaborations in India.

Building on an Existing Partnership with IIT Bombay

This expanded collaboration builds on a relationship with IIT Bombay that was first established in 2018. Under the renewed partnership, IBM researchers will work alongside faculty and students to study:

  • Sovereign and Indic language model adaptation
  • Multimodal AI
  • AI infrastructure and knowledge retrieval

Focus Areas: Sovereign AI and Indic Language Models

Both parties will work on advancing sovereign AI and Indic language models, aiming to improve multilingual AI capabilities for Indian languages through efficient model adaptation and optimisation tools.

The collaboration will also focus on developing multimodal AI systems designed to strengthen:

  • Software programming education
  • Human-AI collaboration
  • Intelligent operations across hybrid cloud environments

IISc’s Collaboration: A New Turn Since 2021

Separately, the collaboration between IISc and IBM researchers, which was initiated in 2021, is set to take a new direction. The partnership now plans to explore:

  • Agentic systems
  • AI for applications
  • Quantum computing algorithm development

What the IISc-IBM Partnership Aims to Build?

The partnership aims to develop agentic AI workflows that would improve orchestration across hybrid cloud environments. It also plans to create lightweight time-series foundation models, based on the IBM Granite model family, specifically for energy analytics.

These models are intended to support:

  • Forecasting
  • Anomaly detection
  • Load disaggregation
  • Energy optimisation

Track Record of the Collaboration

According to the institutes, IIT Bombay, IISc, and IBM, through their ongoing collaboration, have already worked to advance research across artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud, distributed systems, and quantum computing. This partnership has also created opportunities for students and researchers to work on industry-related challenges directly, bridging the gap between academic research and real-world application.

Looking Ahead

With the newly outlined plans under this expanded collaboration, the institutes aim to:

  • Continue interdisciplinary research
  • Encourage the next generation of scientific talent
  • Facilitate innovations that will shape the future of computing

Key Highlights

Particular Details
Institutes involved IIT Bombay, IISc, IBM
IIT Bombay-IBM partnership started 2018
IISc-IBM partnership started 2021
Key focus areas Agentic AI, sovereign AI, quantum computing, Indic language models
IIT Bombay focus Sovereign/Indic LLMs, multimodal AI, AI infrastructure
IISc focus Agentic systems, quantum algorithms, energy analytics models
Model family referenced IBM Granite
Broader goal Interdisciplinary research, talent development, computing innovation

Why This Matters?

This expanded collaboration positions two of India’s premier research institutions at the forefront of cutting-edge computing research, spanning sovereign AI for Indian languages, quantum computing algorithms, and next-generation hybrid cloud systems. With specific emphasis on Indic language model adaptation, the partnership also addresses a notable gap in global AI development, where most large language models have historically been optimised primarily for English and a handful of major global languages.

For students and researchers at IIT Bombay and IISc, this collaboration offers a direct pathway to work on industry-relevant, cutting-edge problems alongside IBM researchers, potentially shaping the next wave of talent equipped to work across AI, quantum computing, and distributed systems — fields expected to be central to future technological and economic competitiveness.
