IIT Madras AI tutor: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras)-incubated Bodhan AI has launched a new set of artificial intelligence tools designed to make digital learning more accessible to students and teachers using Indian languages. Developed in partnership with AI4Bharat, the initiative includes four open AI models for speech recognition, text-to-speech, machine translation and optical character recognition (OCR).

Bodhan AI has also introduced a Student Tutor Bot for Classes 6 to 12 and a Teacher Assistant Bot, providing AI-powered support for learning, teaching and classroom preparation across multiple Indian languages.

AI Tutor Supports 22 Indian Languages

The new Student Tutor Bot is aimed at students from Classes 6 to 12 and is designed to provide learning assistance without requiring students to communicate in English. This could allow students to ask questions and access educational support in Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil and other supported languages.

The initiative addresses one of the challenges associated with the use of AI in education: access to quality AI tools for students who are more comfortable learning in regional languages.

Alongside the tutor, Bodhan AI has released four foundational models covering automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech, machine translation and OCR. The speech recognition model supports 27 languages, while the text-to-speech and OCR models support 23 languages each. The machine translation model covers 22 languages.

Teacher Assistant Bot for Lesson Plans and Assessments

Bodhan AI has also introduced a Teacher Assistant Bot to help educators prepare classroom material. Teachers can use the tool to generate lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, homework and revision material by specifying the class, subject, topic and difficulty level.

The system can also assist with evaluating student work against specified criteria. However, teachers remain in control of the process and can review, edit, regenerate or discard AI-generated content before using it.

This approach is intended to position AI as an assistance tool for educators rather than a replacement for teacher judgement.

Open AI Models for Indian Languages

The four foundational models are being made available as open-weight Digital Public Goods as well as through hosted APIs running on sovereign infrastructure. This could help developers and education organisations build additional applications around Indian-language AI capabilities.

The launch is part of the broader Bharat EduAI Stack, which is envisioned as sovereign digital infrastructure for India’s education ecosystem. The initiative seeks to expand the use of AI in classrooms while addressing the country’s linguistic diversity.

Why Is the IIT Madras AI Tutor Important?

India’s education system includes students who learn across numerous regional languages. By developing AI models and educational tools specifically for Indian languages, initiatives such as Bodhan AI could make AI-assisted learning more accessible beyond English-speaking students.

The Student Tutor Bot and Teacher Assistant Bot also demonstrate how AI can be applied to both sides of the classroom — providing personalised academic assistance to students while helping teachers prepare and evaluate learning material.
