J&K School Vacation: The Jammu and Kashmir government has extended the school summer vacation for the Kashmir Division and the Winter Zones of the Jammu Division up to 26 July 2026, citing continuous heavy rainfall across the Union Territory. Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced the extension in a post on X, and schools will now reopen on 27 July 2026.

What The J&K Government Announced

Minister Itoo said the decision was taken keeping the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and their families as the foremost priority. The extension applies to all government and recognised private schools in the affected zones. This is the second time this season that the J&K school vacation has been extended, after the original break was announced on 6 July 2026 due to intense heatwave conditions, with schools initially set to reopen on 20 July.

  • Original vacation announced: 6 July 2026 (due to heatwave)
  • First reopening date: 20 July 2026
  • Extended vacation: Till 26 July 2026
  • Schools reopen: 27 July 2026

Why The Break Was Extended

Heavy rainfall has lashed most parts of Jammu and Kashmir since Sunday, 19 July 2026, triggering flash floods and landslides in several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for heavy downpours, prompting the government to delay reopening rather than risk student safety on waterlogged or landslide-hit routes. A landslide in Poonch district on 20 July left multiple people dead, underlining the severity of the weather situation across the region.

Areas Affected And Emergency Response

The extension covers the Kashmir Division and the Winter Zones of the Jammu Division, where weather conditions have been most disruptive. Emergency response teams have reportedly been placed on high alert, with key highway stretches blocked by mudslides and falling stones in some areas. Neighbouring Himachal Pradesh has also seen school closures amid similar red-alert weather warnings, reflecting the wider spell of heavy rain across the northern region.

Local administrations in the worst-hit districts have also been coordinating rescue and relief efforts alongside the school closure, given the scale of disruption caused by the rains. Officials have asked residents to avoid streams, rivers, and other vulnerable spots, and to report any distress signals to local authorities promptly. The overlapping heatwave-then-rain pattern this season has meant that this year’s summer break has already been extended twice, first for extreme heat and now for extreme rainfall.

What Students And Parents Should Know

Minister Itoo urged everyone to stay safe, remain vigilant, and follow advisories issued by the concerned authorities during the extended break. Parents and students in the Kashmir Division and the Jammu winter zones should treat 27 July 2026 as the confirmed reopening date, while continuing to monitor official channels for any further updates, since the situation remains weather-dependent. Schools outside these specific zones should check with local authorities for their own reopening schedule.
