Kerala Gets First Instalment of SSK Funds

Kerala's General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced that the state has received the first instalment of central funds for Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK). The Centre has released ₹92.41 crore out of the approved ₹109 crore for educational purposes. These funds are recurring in nature and are meant for children under the Right to Education Act. The announcement came on May 17, 2023, bringing some relief to the state's education system. However, this is just a portion of what Kerala is entitled to receive, as significant arrears remain pending.

Pending Funds and Impact on Education

Despite receiving the first instalment, Kerala still awaits non-recurring funds of ₹17 crore meant for construction activities. Minister Sivankutty pointed out that arrears amounting to ₹1,158 crore from 2023-24 are yet to be cleared by the central government. The delay affects around 45 lakh children studying in public schools across Kerala. The state government has been bearing the Centre's share of the financial burden to maintain educational services. Additionally, the Centre has informed the Supreme Court about plans to allocate SSK funds for appointing special educators for differently-abled children soon.
