Mumbai, August 22, 2024 – The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has officially postponed the State Services Preliminary Exam, which was initially scheduled for August 25, 2024. This decision comes in response to widespread student protests and concerns over exam scheduling conflicts.

Why the Exam Was Postponed

The postponement was prompted by protests from students who are preparing for various state government competitive exams. They expressed concerns that the MPSC exams clashed with the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) exams, making it difficult for candidates appearing in both. Additionally, students were dissatisfied with MPSC’s decision to exclude exams for the agriculture department from the current schedule.

  • Reason for Protests: Clash with IBPS exam dates and exclusion of agriculture department exams.
  • Student Demands: Postponement of MPSC exams and inclusion of agriculture department exams.

Maharashtra Public Service Commission Announcement by MPSC

The decision to postpone the exam was made during a meeting held in Mumbai, where MPSC members met with representatives of the protesting students. Following the meeting, MPSC made the announcement on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that the Maharashtra Gazetted Civil Services Combined Preliminary Examination 2024 has been postponed. A new date for the exam will be announced soon.

  • Meeting Details: Held in Mumbai with MPSC members and student representatives.
  • Official Statement: Postponement confirmed, with a new date to be announced.

Maharashtra Public Service Commission Political Reactions and Continuing Protests

Despite the postponement, the protests have continued, with students blocking the key LBS road in Pune. The situation has also escalated politically, with NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar issuing an ultimatum to the government. He stated that if the government does not take the students’ demands seriously, he would personally join the protests. Other political leaders, including Rohit Pawar and Supriya Sule, have also expressed support for the students by visiting the protest sites.

  • Political Involvement: Sharad Pawar threatens to join protests if demands are not met.
  • Ongoing Unrest: Students continue to block roads and demand the recruitment of 15,000 posts.

Impact and Next Steps

The decision to postpone the Maharashtra Public Service Commission exam reflects the significant pressure from student communities and the political landscape. However, the ongoing protests indicate that further action may be needed to address the concerns fully. The new exam date is expected to be announced soon, and the situation remains dynamic as students and political leaders continue to push for broader changes.

  • Student Impact: Continued unrest and calls for additional reforms.
  • Future Developments: Awaiting the announcement of a new exam date and potential further actions by the government.

The MPSC’s decision to postpone the State Services Preliminary Exam underscores the influence of student protests and political pressures on government decisions. As the situation evolves, the focus remains on ensuring that the concerns of students are address
