NMC MBBS seats 2026-27: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 13,186 additional MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year, taking the total number of MBBS seats in the country to 1,40,214 across 836 medical colleges. The increase comes at a time when NEET UG counselling for the 2026-27 academic session is already underway.

Government vs Private College Breakdown

Of the newly added seats:

• 2,786 seats have been added across 445 government medical colleges, taking their combined total to 63,971
• 10,400 seats have been added across 391 private medical colleges, taking their combined total to 76,243

This shows that the bulk of the new seat additions this year have come from the private medical college segment, significantly outpacing the increase in government college capacity.

Updated Seat Matrix

The NMC has released the updated undergraduate (MBBS) seat matrix for 2026-27, effective as of September 1, 2026. This updated matrix reflects both permissions granted for new medical colleges offering MBBS courses, as well as increases in annual intake capacity at existing institutions.

State-Wise Breakdown: Karnataka Leads

Among states, Karnataka tops the list with 1,650 additional MBBS seats, taking its overall total to 15,745 seats across 76 medical colleges.

Tamil Nadu follows closely with 1,250 additional seats, bringing its total to 14,299, while Bihar ranks third with 1,240 additional seats. Uttar Pradesh rounds out the top four with 1,200 new seats added this cycle.

Seat Matrix Subject to Revision

The NMC has clarified that this Seat Matrix may be revised based on subsequent decisions of the Appeal Committee(s) or any other competent authority. Any revised seat matrix will be uploaded on the official NMC website and must be considered by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and respective state counselling committees for ongoing counselling and admissions.

What Happens If There’s a Discrepancy?

In case any counselling committee notices a discrepancy or deviation in the approved seat matrix, the matter must be referred to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) for clarification. Counselling committees have been explicitly directed not to permit admissions against seats that exceed the number approved and notified by the MARB.

Colleges Asked to Verify Their Details

All medical colleges have been advised to verify their institutional details in the seat matrix and report any discrepancies or omissions to the President or Director of the MARB, preferably before the commencement of counselling.

For the 2026-27 academic year, admissions must be made strictly against seats approved and notified by the MARB, as amended from time to time.

Warning Against Over-Admission

The NMC has issued a clear caution to medical colleges against admitting students beyond their approved annual intake. Any such action would be treated as non-compliance with the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and applicable regulations, potentially attracting regulatory and penal action against the concerned institution.
