UCAS 2026 report: New figures covering applications submitted by the 14 January equal consideration deadline show Indian demand for UK undergraduate study continuing to rise, though at a slower pace than some other major sending countries.

Key India Numbers From the Data

According to the UCAS 2026 report, India recorded 8,870 undergraduate applicants by the January deadline, up 1.5% on the previous year. This keeps India in place as the second-largest source of international undergraduate applicants to UK universities through the UCAS system, behind China. Overall, international undergraduate applications rose to 124,830, up from 118,800 the year before, a 5.1% increase. Total applicants across all categories, domestic and international, reached 619,360 by the deadline, a 3.1% rise on the same point last year.

Why India’s Growth Trails China’s

While the UCAS 2026 report confirms India’s numbers are still climbing, the pace is far more modest than the 10% jump recorded from China, which sent 34,380 applicants and remains the largest international market. The USA logged 6,920 applicants, up 3.5%, while Ireland posted the sharpest rise among the top five nations at 12%, reaching 6,440 applicants. UCAS chief executive Jo Saxton described the wider rise in applications from disadvantaged backgrounds as encouraging, while also flagging a new scholarships and bursaries tool meant to help applicants see available financial support more clearly.

Institution-Level Trends Worth Watching

Beyond nationality breakdowns, the UCAS 2026 report shows higher tariff institutions — typically the most selective UK universities — saw applicant numbers climb 6.9% to 247,130. Medium tariff institutions grew 2.8% to 212,680, and lower tariff institutions rose a more modest 1.8% to 180,210. Subject-wise, medicine and dentistry applications jumped over 12%, alongside strong double-digit growth in maths and engineering, while computing applications fell 8% and language courses continued to lose ground. For Indian applicants weighing course and institution choices, these patterns suggest competition is intensifying fastest at the top end of the UK sector.

What This Means for Indian Aspirants

The steady, if slower, growth in Indian applications documented in this cycle arrives against a backdrop of tighter visa rules and rising tuition costs that had previously dented demand from India in past cycles. Aspirants should note that this data reflects applications made by the January equal consideration deadline; UCAS separately tracks additional applications through the June deadline and the subsequent Clearing process, so final enrolment figures for the cycle will differ from these early-stage numbers. Students still planning to apply should factor in scholarship and bursary options, given UCAS’s renewed push to improve visibility of financial support.
