The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formally implemented its Biannual Admissions Regulation for all Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from the 2026-27 academic year. Under this new regulation, all UGC-recognised universities and degree colleges must offer two distinct admission windows per year: one for January session entry and one for July or August session entry.
This regulation, aligned with NEP 2020 goals of increasing flexibility in higher education, is intended to:

- Reduce the gap year phenomenon where students wait 6 to 12 months for a new academic session
- Allow students who missed the main admission cycle to enter in the January session without waiting a full year
- Enable universities to utilise vacant seats across both semesters
- Support working professionals and adult learners who can only join mid-year
How Biannual Admissions Work
| Session | Approximate Entry Period | For Programmes |
|---|---|---|
| July/August Session | May to July (application), August start | Main intake for most UG and PG programmes |
| January Session | October to December (application), January start | Additional intake, primarily for PG and professional programmes |
What This Means for Students
- Students who missed July 2026 admissions at a university now have a formal pathway to join in January 2027 without losing a full academic year
- UGC has directed all HEIs to update their official websites and academic calendars to reflect both admission windows clearly
- IGNOU, state open universities, and online universities have been following this model for years — the regulation now extends it to all conventional colleges and universities
