Schools, colleges, universities, and government education departments across India are hosting plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, recycling initiatives, and environmental awareness programmes today, June 5, 2026, on the occasion of World Environment Day. The annual event, observed globally every June 5, is coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and this year’s theme is “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”
The Ministry of Education had directed all CBSE-affiliated schools and centrally funded institutions to mark World Environment Day with student-led environmental activities as part of the Eco-Club and Swachh Bharat Mission integration in the school curriculum.

How Indian Educational Institutions Are Marking the Day
- Plantation drives in school and college campuses with each student planting at least one sapling
- Environmental quiz and poster competitions for students at all levels
- Guest lectures on climate change, soil conservation, and water management
- Awareness marches in school uniforms through local communities
- Pledges on sustainable living as part of the NEP 2020 values and skills education framework
- Submission of environment project reports by students as part of their internal assessment in Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Studies
The Ministry of Education’s integration of environmental education across subjects at school and university level under NEP 2020 makes such annual observances an important part of the formal curriculum, not merely an extracurricular activity.
