Schools across Tamil Nadu opened their gates today, Thursday June 4, 2026, welcoming students of all classes from Class 1 to Class 12 for the start of the new 2026 to 27 academic session. The reopening follows a brief three-day delay from the originally planned June 1 date, which was postponed by the state government due to severe summer heat conditions affecting children and families across the state.
What Led to the Delayed Reopening
The Tamil Nadu School Education Department had initially planned a staggered schedule. Classes 4 to 12 were to begin on June 1 and Classes 1 to 3 were to start on June 4 following mandatory teacher training. However, the state government revised this and unified the reopening to June 4 for all classes, following representations from parents, teachers, and stakeholders who raised concerns about difficulties arising from separate start dates for children from the same family studying in different grades.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu directed the School Education Department to implement a single reopening date across all classes, and the decision was communicated to all Chief Educational Officers and District Educational Officers well in advance.
What Changed in the 2026 to 27 Academic Year
The reopening comes with important curriculum changes for primary grades.
- Classes 1 to 3 will follow a revised curriculum aligned with the Tamil Nadu State Education Policy (SEP) announced in August 2025
- Updated Term 1 textbooks for Classes 1 to 3 are ready and will be distributed to students on the first day
- Teacher orientation and training for Classes 1 to 3 was conducted by the Directorate of School Education from June 1 to June 3
- Syllabus updates for Classes 4 to 12 are underway, with teachers from across Tamil Nadu involved in curriculum revision at the state level in Chennai
Who Is Affected
This reopening covers:
- All government schools across Tamil Nadu
- Government-aided schools
- Matriculation schools
- Private schools for Classes 1 to 12
Principals across all categories of schools were instructed to ensure classrooms, laboratories, toilets, and facilities were cleaned and prepared before June 4.
School Timings and Arrangements
Standard school timings will apply from day one. Schools have been instructed to ensure:
- Mid-day meal scheme is operational from the first day for government school students
- Student enrolment drives are ongoing; schools enrolling at least 50 more students than the previous year will receive certificates of appreciation from the state government
- Physical infrastructure inspection was completed by District Educational Officers prior to reopening
Why This Matters
Tamil Nadu has one of the largest school education systems in India with over 43,000 government and government-aided schools serving nearly 50 lakh students. The June 4 reopening, supported by new textbooks, revised curriculum for primary grades, and fresh teacher training, signals the state’s commitment to the National Education Policy 2020 goals at the foundational level.
Parents should ensure their children carry their school ID, stationery, and the admission card from the previous year if required for re-enrolment verification.
