IGNOU B.Ed Entrance Exam: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) conducts a national-level entrance test each year for admission to its two-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programme, offered in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode. For the most recent cycle, IGNOU released its official notification on January 29, 2026, with the entrance test held on March 29, 2026, and results already declared on the university’s website. Candidates aiming for the next session should treat the process below as a reliable template.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must have secured at least 50% marks in their graduation or post-graduation in Science, Social Science, Commerce, or Humanities to apply for the IGNOU B.Ed Entrance Test. Those with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology, specialising in Science and Mathematics, need a minimum of 55% marks. A five percent relaxation in the qualifying marks is available to candidates from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, OBC (non-creamy layer), and Persons with Disability categories. while confirming exact dates only through the official notification when it is released on ignou.ac.in.

Applicants must also have completed a teacher education programme recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) through face-to-face mode; a master’s degree awarded without a first degree is not accepted for this purpose.

Exam Pattern

The IGNOU B.Ed Entrance Exam is conducted offline and lasts two hours. The question paper carries 100 multiple-choice questions worth 100 marks, with one mark for each correct answer and no negative marking for wrong or unattempted questions. The paper is split into two parts. Part A, worth 80 marks, covers four compulsory sections: General English Comprehension, Logical and Analytical Reasoning, Educational and General Awareness, and Teaching-Learning and the School. Part B, worth 20 marks, tests subject competence, and candidates must choose one subject from Science, Mathematics, Social Science, English, or Hindi.

Syllabus

Part A draws from general teaching aptitude: English comprehension passages, logical and analytical reasoning problems, current affairs and educational awareness, and questions on teaching-learning concepts and the school as an institution. Part B is based on the chosen subject at the graduation level, with topics generally aligned to the school curriculum prescribed by NCERT or CBSE for classes IX and X. Candidates are advised to download the detailed subject-wise syllabus from the official notification once released, since exact topic weightage can be refined between sessions.

Preparation Strategy

Success in the IGNOU B.Ed Entrance Exam depends more on consistent revision and time management than last-minute effort, given the fixed two-hour window for 100 questions. Candidates should practise previous years’ question papers and mock tests to get familiar with the pattern and identify recurring topics, particularly in reasoning and general awareness, where question style tends to remain stable across sessions.

Reading newspapers regularly helps with the educational and general awareness section, while NCERT textbooks for the chosen subject are useful for Part B. Since there is no negative marking, attempting every question is advisable rather than leaving any blank.
