IGNOU MA Development Studies: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a one-year Master of Arts in Development Studies (MADVSOY) programme for the July 2026 session. The programme is being offered through the university’s School of Extension and Development Studies (SOEDS).

Who Can Apply?

This 40-credit postgraduate programme is aimed at graduates looking to build careers in the development sector, and has been made accessible to a wide range of academic backgrounds. It is open to:

  • Graduates of four-year undergraduate programmes (FYUP) from any discipline
  • Graduates of professional agriculture and allied four-year or five-year undergraduate programmes
  • Candidates holding a four-year BE or BTech degree in any branch

This broad eligibility criteria means the programme isn’t restricted to students from a social sciences background, allowing engineering and agriculture graduates to pursue a specialised postgraduate qualification in development studies as well.

Course Structure

The programme is structured across two semesters, each carrying 20 credits.

Semester 1 includes:

  • Introduction to Development and Development Theories
  • Dynamics of Development
  • Issues and Challenges of Development

Semester 2 includes Research Methodology in Development Studies as a compulsory course, along with a choice of electives from:

  • Gender Studies
  • Development Planning and Communication
  • Training and Development
  • Local Self Governance
  • Health and Development
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
  • Urban Development
  • Project Work

This elective structure allows students to tailor part of their learning toward a specific interest area within the broader development studies field, whether that’s governance, health, gender, or corporate sustainability work.

What the Programme Aims to Deliver?

According to IGNOU, the programme is designed to equip students with a strong grounding in development theories and practices, combined with research and field-oriented skills relevant to the sector. This combination of theoretical coursework and applied research methodology is intended to prepare graduates for both academic and practical roles in development-related work.

Career Opportunities After the Programme

As per the university’s statement, graduates of this programme can pursue opportunities across:

  • Government and non-government organisations (NGOs)
  • Development agencies
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives
  • Other organisations working on social and economic development

This positions the programme as a relevant qualification for those aiming to work in policy, grassroots development, or corporate sustainability functions.

Programme Fee

The total programme fee for this one-year MA has been set at Rs 8,000, making it a relatively affordable postgraduate option compared to many full-time specialised master’s programmes in similar fields.

Why This Matters?

With a growing number of opportunities emerging in the development and social sector — spanning NGOs, government schemes, and corporate CSR mandates — this programme offers a structured, flexible, and affordable pathway for graduates from diverse academic backgrounds to formally qualify for such roles. The open and distance learning format, combined with IGNOU’s broad eligibility criteria, could particularly benefit working professionals or those transitioning into the development sector from unrelated fields like engineering or agriculture.
