AIBE 22 Syllabus 2026: If AIBE 21 has just gone by and you are already thinking about the next attempt — or if you are a fresh law graduate wondering what exactly stands between you and your Certificate of Practice — this is the article you need to read carefully. The Bar Council of India (BCI) is expected to release the formal AIBE 22 notification later in 2026, but the AIBE 22 Syllabus 2026 is structurally consistent with the previous examination cycle and covers the same 19 core law subjects that define this mandatory qualifying test. Understanding the syllabus deeply — not just skimming its surface — is what separates candidates who clear AIBE in one attempt from those who need multiple tries.

What is AIBE, and why can it not Be Skipped

Before getting into subject-wise specifics, the purpose of this examination deserves clear framing. The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is a mandatory qualifying test conducted by the Bar Council of India for every law graduate seeking a Certificate of Practice (CoP) — the legal document that authorises an advocate to represent clients in courts across India. Without clearing the AIBE and receiving the CoP, an advocate cannot independently practice in courts, regardless of their academic qualifications or enrollment with a State Bar Council.

In a significant structural update for 2026, the AIBE exam is now conducted twice a year — a change that eliminates the long wait candidates previously endured between attempts and gives law graduates more frequent opportunities to obtain their CoP. This makes preparing methodically for AIBE 22 even more worthwhile for those who could not clear AIBE 21.

AIBE 22 Syllabus 2026 — The 19 Subjects at a Glance

The AIBE 22 Syllabus 2026 is built around 19 core law subjects drawn from the standard LL.B. curriculum, with the highest weightage assigned to Constitutional Law, Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC/BNSS) — each carrying approximately 10 questions. This is followed by subjects like IPC/BNS, Evidence Act, and Contract Law, which typically carry 6 to 8 questions each. Subjects like Company Law, Cyber Law, and Intellectual Property Rights carry comparatively lower weightage.

The 19 subjects in the AIBE 22 Syllabus 2026 can be broadly divided into two categories based on their importance: High Weightage subjects (8–10 marks each) and Medium to Low Weightage subjects (2–5 marks each). Together, Constitutional Law, BNS, BNSS, and CPC alone contribute more than 38 marks out of 100 — making these four sections the undisputed pillars of AIBE preparation.

Here is a subject-wise breakdown of all 19 topics:

High Weightage Subjects (8–10 marks each): Constitutional Law (10 questions) covers the history and nature of the Indian Constitution, fundamental rights, union and state relations, Parliament, judiciary, emergency provisions, and constitutional amendments. Code of Civil Procedure (CPC) and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC/BNSS) each carry 10 questions and test procedural knowledge critical to courtroom practice.

Important New Additions Since 2024: Since 2024, three entirely new subjects have been incorporated into the AIBE syllabus — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). These replace or supplement the older IPC and Evidence Act frameworks and reflect India’s landmark criminal law reforms. Candidates preparing for AIBE 22 must ensure their Bare Acts and preparation material are updated to reflect these new laws.

Other Subjects Covered: The remaining subjects in the AIBE 22 Syllabus 2026 include Contract Law, Family Law, Law of Torts, Property Law, Environmental Law, Company Law, Labour Law, Administrative Law, Land Acquisition Law, Negotiable Instruments Act, Consumer Protection Law, Cyber Law, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Professional Ethics and Bar Council of India Rules, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Each of these carries between 2 and 6 questions, depending on the year.

Exam Pattern — What the Paper Looks Like

The AIBE 22 exam will follow the same structure as previous editions — 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) drawn from all 19 subjects, to be completed in 3 hours and 30 minutes, in offline OMR-based open-book format. The question distribution across subjects is not equal and is not disclosed in advance by BCI.

There is no negative marking in AIBE. A wrong answer gives zero marks — the same as an unanswered question. This means every candidate should attempt all 100 questions without reservation, as guessing carries no penalty, but a correct guess earns a full mark.

The Open Book Rule — What You Can and Cannot Carry

This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of AIBE preparation. Only Bare Acts without any short notes or comments are allowed inside the examination hall. Guidebooks, solved papers, handwritten notes, printed summaries, and annotated texts are strictly prohibited. Candidates found with prohibited material will face disqualification.

This rule makes the AIBE 22 Syllabus 2026 preparation strategy fundamentally different from most other legal exams. The focus must be on familiarity with Bare Act structure, section numbering, and indexing — so candidates can quickly locate the relevant provision during the exam rather than trying to recall it from memory.

Qualifying Marks for AIBE 22

General and OBC candidates must score a minimum of 45 out of 100 marks to qualify for AIBE and receive the Certificate of Practice. SC and ST candidates need a minimum of 40 marks to clear the examination. The AIBE pass rate has been consistently above 60% in recent years, reflecting that the exam is designed as a minimum-competence standard for legal practice, not a competitive filter that eliminates the majority of candidates. More than two out of three candidates who appeared in AIBE XX 2025 qualified — a strong signal that structured preparation pays off.

Smart Preparation Strategy for AIBE 22

Given the AIBE 22 Syllabus 2026, here is what a focused preparation plan looks like:

Prioritise the heavy hitters first. Constitutional Law, CPC, BNSS, and BNS together can give you 38+ marks. Master these before touching the lower-weightage subjects. Organise your Bare Acts. Use sticky tabs or index markers to navigate sections quickly during the open-book exam — speed of location matters. Do not neglect the new criminal laws. BNS, BNSS, and BSA are now permanent fixtures of the syllabus. Candidates who approach them as “new and uncertain” lose a significant scoring advantage. Since approximately 80% of AIBE questions come directly from Bare Acts, the primary focus must remain on them rather than secondary guides or textbooks.
