As modern education shifts toward skill-based instruction, many prospective educators frequently ask what micro-teaching is and why it plays such a pivotal role in professional development. First introduced in 1963 by Dwight W. Allen at Stanford University, micro-teaching is a specialized teacher training technique where trainee teachers practice a single teaching skill in a scaled-down setting—typically delivering a 5- to 10-minute lesson to a small group of 5 to 10 peers or students.

By simplifying class size, duration, and subject material, this method allows instructors to build confidence and refine specific instructional habits without the overwhelming pressure of managing a full-scale classroom.

The Core Structure and Origin of the Microteaching Method

Understanding teacher training technique requires examining its unique operational model. Unlike traditional student-teaching internships that drop candidates directly into 45-minute lectures before 40 students, micro-teaching isolates individual competencies.

Trainees focus on one core ability at a time—such as stimulus variation, explanation clarity, effective questioning, or positive reinforcement. Sessions are frequently video-recorded or observed closely by supervisors, allowing candidates to receive immediate, evidence-based feedback on their body language, voice modulation, and concept delivery.

The Six-Step Teacher Training Technique Cycle in Practice

To fully grasp what microteaching in practical execution is, educators follow a structured, repetitive loop known as the teacher training technique:

  • Plan: The trainee designs a brief, targeted lesson around one specific skill.

  • Teach: The lesson is delivered to a small peer group within 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Feedback: Observers and mentors provide immediate, constructive analysis.

  • Re-Plan: The candidate modifies the lesson plan based on received critique.

  • Re-Teach: The improved lesson is re-delivered to another small group.

  • Re-Feedback: Final evaluation measures the instructor’s visible progress.

This continuous feedback loop turns theoretical knowledge into actionable pedagogical habits through immediate practice.
