The All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC), comprising placement cell representatives from all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, held a formal discussion on introducing a ban on sharing JEE Advanced ranks and category information with recruiters participating in IIT campus placements, starting from the 2026-27 placement season. The development was confirmed by Sushant Kumar Shrivastava, coordinator of Training and Placement at IIT BHU Varanasi and co-convenor of AIPC, though he clarified that the resolution has not been formally approved yet and is still under consideration.
The proposal stems from a growing pattern of alleged caste-based discrimination during campus placements, where students from SC, ST, and OBC communities have faced pressure to disclose their JEE Advanced category ranks to recruiters — information that can reveal their reserved category status and potentially lead to bias.

Background of the Issue
| Year | Development |
|---|---|
| 2023 | Careers360 first reported complaints from IIT Kanpur, Patna, and Guwahati about JEE rank disclosure in placements |
| 2023 | IIT Bombay issued anti-discrimination guidelines calling it “inappropriate” to ask JEE Advanced ranks |
| 2025 | NCSC issued notices to IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi after 300 SC students complained about rank-based discrimination |
| 2026 | AIPC holds formal discussion on a universal ban across all IITs |
What the Proposed Policy Would Mean
- Placement offices at all IITs would prohibit the collection, display, or forwarding of JEE Advanced ranks and category information to recruiters
- Students could still voluntarily choose to mention their JEE rank on their resume
- Recruiters asking for JEE category ranks would be flagged as a policy violation
Current Position Across IITs
- Some IITs like IIT Kanpur have already stopped sharing JEE ranks for the past two years
- A student from IIT Kanpur placement cell stated: “We don’t share JEE ranks at all since the last two years. Students may choose to mention their JEE Advanced rank in their resume. Only a few quant firms ask for it.”
- Other IITs are still awaiting a uniform policy from AIPC before implementing changes
The next academic session for IITs begins in August 2026 and final-year students will begin drafting CVs for the upcoming placement season very shortly. A formal decision from AIPC on this policy is expected soon.
