Aspirants who appeared for one of India’s toughest examinations are now on the edge of their seats. The Union Public Service Commission will announce the Civil Services Preliminary Examination (CSE) 2026 result soon, and candidates will be able to check the UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026 on the official website.

When will the UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026 be released?

The exact date remains unconfirmed, but expectations are building based on historical patterns. UPSC typically declares the Prelims result within 5 to 7 weeks of the examination date, with the most probable window for 2026 expected between 10th and 12th June 2026. As per previous years’ trends, the UPSC CSE Prelims 2026 results are expected in the third week, with the commission having issued the prelims answer key on May 28.

It is worth noting that the UPSC Prelims Result 2026 is expected to be published around 11th or 14th June, and candidates are advised to follow the official website attentively. The UPSC CSE Prelims result is usually released late in the evening.

Scale of the UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026

This year’s exam saw massive participation across the country. Around 5.49 lakh candidates appeared for the UPSC Prelims 2026 out of more than 8.19 lakh registered applicants, reflecting an attendance rate of about 67%. The exam was conducted on May 24, 2026, for around 933 vacancies across 2,072 centres in 83 cities in India.

Steps to Download UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026

Candidates can follow these simple steps once the result is officially declared:

  1. Visit the official UPSC website upsc.gov.in and select the written results from the dropdown menu.
  2. Locate the UPSC Prelims Result 2026 link.
  3. Click on the link to download the UPSC CSE Prelims Result in PDF format.
  4. Search for your roll number in the list using the ‘Ctrl + F’ function.
  5. If your roll number appears in the PDF, it means you have cleared the UPSC CSE Prelims 2026.

Important: This Is Not a Scorecard

Candidates should be clear about what the result actually contains. The UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026 is not a scorecard — it is a list of roll numbers of candidates who have cleared the cutoff and are eligible to appear in UPSC Mains 2026, and individual marks are not disclosed at this stage. The UPSC CSE result PDF will contain only the roll numbers of candidates shortlisted for the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026.

Expected Cutoff for UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026

Cutoff predictions are based on the difficulty level of this year’s paper. Experts expect the UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026 general category cutoff to be lower than usual, around 72 to 77 marks, because GS Paper I was difficult and lengthy, and CSAT has strict qualifying criteria.

For context on how cutoffs have fluctuated in recent years, 2023 recorded one of the lowest cutoffs for the General category at 75.41 marks due to high exam difficulty, while in 2024, the General category cutoff increased significantly to 87.98 marks, indicating a recovery from the 2023 dip.

What Happens After Qualifying: DAF-1 Submission

Clearing the prelims is only the first step. The Commission provides candidates who were shortlisted in the UPSC IAS Prelims 2026 merit list with a window for providing their details in the DAF-1 (Detailed Application Form). Candidates must fill in the DAF-1 to appear for the Mains examination, and applicants who fail to submit this form will be disqualified from the examination.

Additionally, those who qualify for the UPSC Prelims examination 2026 will have to mandatorily log in to the official portal, update their details, and submit the application form to get the e-admit card.

UPSC Mains 2026 and Final Selection

Looking ahead, the UPSC Civil Services Mains Examination 2026 is scheduled to begin on 21 August 2026. Every year, UPSC selects around 12,000 to 15,000 candidates for the Mains exam, which is about 1% to 1.5% of the total candidates who appear for the Prelims. The final UPSC 2026 result, after the interview stage, is expected around April or May 2027.

Advice for Candidates

All candidates who appeared for the UPSC CSE Prelims 2026 are advised to regularly check upsc.gov.in for the official UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026 announcement and download the result PDF immediately once released. Those who qualify should promptly complete their DAF-1 submission and e-admit card registration to avoid any last-minute disqualification, while simultaneously beginning preparation for the Mains examination scheduled in August.
